“Solar Power,” Lorde’s first album in four years, opens with “The Path,” a high-gloss ’60s folk-inspired pop song that offers a hazy sketch of the singer’s life now: She’s a “teen millionaire having nightmares from the camera flash,” who lives on an island and is unavailable when the label calls. There are apparent references to the 2016 Met Gala: “Arm in a cast at the museum gala/ Fork in my purse to take home to my mother/ Supermodels all dancing ’round a pharaoh’s tomb.”

There’s nothing wrong with references to the 2016 Met Gala, which has already given us so much — without it we wouldn’t have Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” — but “The Path” is an early flashing red light that “Solar Power” has a very different Lorde on offer.

But in a world grappling with racial-justice issues, in the uncertain middle of a pandemic, “Solar Power,” with its vague whiff of rich white lady condescension, doesn’t land right.
